Family Fun Friday: Marshmallow Night

What are we doing, you ask? Read on to find out...

It started with a plan!

Instead of making marshmallow shooters for the girls, Daniel drew up the plans, taught the girls to measure and the names of the different joints, and had them build their own marshmallow shooters!

Natalie needed a little help, but Allison built hers completely on her own!

The first few times Daniel, Allison, and I took a shot, we were disappointed that they didn't go too far. Enter Natalie. Her first shot went zooming past all of us, and we were looking around wondering what just happened!

Turns out the secret is putting the marshmallow all the way down the tube.

We also made a marshmallow catapult. (That turned out to be Allison's favorite!)

Once we had it down, we took it outside to have a shooting contest. (Which soon turned into a shooting each other contest!)

Good times... We love Family Fun Friday!

Fall-scented Finger Paints!

This is going to have to become a tradition; fall-scented finger paints! Oh, how fun is that? When I found the recipe on Almost Unschoolers, I was SO excited! And, it didn't disappoint!

Simple finger paint recipe:
  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • 4 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 cups water
For the "scents," we used ginger, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and chai latte mix. Almost Unschoolers also recommended apple cider mix and orange spice tea!

(They were also actually yummy!)

Just think of the possibilities... peppermint or evergreen at Christmas, chocolate at Valentine's Day... mmmm...

Pumpkin Bracelets

Technically fall started last night, but as today is the first full day of fall, we had to do a little something fun for our school craft. Have you been over to eighteen25's blog lately? Every day there's a new guest with awesome fall crafty ideas. I got this one from Brown Paper Packages.

I thought this craft would be fairly simple, but it was actually harder than I thought to stick the needle through the candy pumpkins. Poor Allison poked herself, so Grandma and I decided to take over. It was worth it, though. Aren't they fun?

Awww...
Happy First Day of Fall!

LA County Fair, take 2!

Here we are getting ready for our second day at the Fair! This time we prepared by doing book reports for free rides. Guess who forgot to bring them? Ugh! Silly Mommy... but, at least the girls didn't even care. Whew... not sure how much longer I'll be given grace!

Did I mention what a gorgeous first day of fall it was? Overcast and in the 70's. As fun as the fair was, I could have stayed home with my jeans and fall-scented candles and enjoyed doing nothing, as well! But, I'm glad I went.

This time around we did the kid area, saw a magic show and the Pirate stunt show, and hit the princess house one more time. We didn't even make it to the farm animals, and the next thing we knew it was time to go!

Allison had a blast doing the bubble. It looked so fun! One poor kid was super scared and didn't want to get wet. He was suppose to go before Allison, but chickened out. When he saw how much fun Allison was having, he decided to try it. Somehow, they didn't get it closed all the way, and it popped open and immediately was filling with water. Poor boy. The look of terror on his face! I had to tell the workers -- scary! Here's Allison's experience:

Bead Necklaces

This is what school looked like for us today... well, at least part of it! I found this creative idea on Chasing Cheerios and thought we'd give it a try.

Since we are on our "L" unit, the girls came up with words that began with "L" and spelled them using beaded necklaces! Of course, Sierra was well-destracted, which helped, as well! Thankful for fun ideas from blog land! What did homeschool moms do before computers?!?!?

Ponderings...

I've often heard that raising kids gets more difficult as they get older... and it seems impossible. But, lately I've started to think that's true. Being physically exhausted is tough. And, that's where I'm living right now. At the same time, I am seeing my oldest daughter mature, and I can see how you grow to love them so much you just don't want to see them hurt. Yet, it's in our trials that we grow and in our weakness that He can be strong.

I know I've mentioned this before, but I try to enjoy each day and not wish away these times. But, today I am tired. I feel like there are numerous cards I want to write to friends... projects around the house I need to do.... planning I need to do for school and MOPS. I feel as though I am doing a little of everything, and nothing too well. I know it will pass... and I am thankful that it is drawing me to my knees, and reminding me of where my strength comes from!

For my birthday this past year, my Mom got me the most wonderful devotional book I've ever read. Seriously, I think every woman should have this book. It's called Jesus Calling, and literally every day the message is personalized just for me; (or so it feels!). Today was no different. I probably wouldn't have read it today had it not been another tough day. My mom is visiting, and I want to use every free minute to get things done. But, Jesus was calling, and I am so glad I listened! The scripture reference was 2 Corinthians 4:16 - 17. I am going to commit them to memory tonight!

God, thank you for the trials. Thank you for drawing me to You! Renew my strength. Amen!

More Homeschool Fun

As promised, here are a few of our homeschool activities from this past week. This first one was pretty simple, and totally impromptu. The girls picked an object, rolled a die, and drew the numeral and the object that number of times.

Now is a great time to head to Target for school stuff... at least it was a few days ago. They are clearing out their dollar section stuff to make room for Halloween, and have lots of educational items on sale. I picked up this science experiment book for 70 cents! This was the classic "volcanic" reaction of baking soda and vinegar, only used to blow-up a balloon. Pretty cool!

We just finished our unit on the moon, but on the first day we practiced our letter writing on "moon sand." I was so happy to finally have a use for the giant pixie sticks we had at Natalie's last birthday! I thought the girls would LOVE to lick their fingers, but Allison decided it was too sour, so Natalie wouldn't even try it. And, I discovered that I actually liked it!

Finally, we've been using our upper and lower-case letters to play both "Go-fish," and "Memory." The girls prefer "Go-fish." It's definitely helpful for Natalie, but just plain fun for Allison.

TGIF, friends -- I'm going to bed!

49er Baby

Grandma and Grandpa arrive tomorrow. This picture is for Grandpa. I grew-up in the 80's in San Francisco Bay... 'nuff said! I have lots more pictures, recipes, and activities to post, but I've been too busy. I'm hoping to give you some more of our school activities once grandma plays with my kids all day :) See you tomorrow, Mom and Dad! Can't wait!

Whiteboard writing

This afternoon Allison was writing on the whiteboard. I snuck up behind her and took a picture. You can imagine how thrilled I was when I saw what she was writing!

Letter to my Husband

Dear Daniel,
As you know, my favorite season is just around the corner. If I ask to go to the store, (specifically the Dollar Tree or Target) by myself, you probably shouldn't let me... especially with a credit card! So far Target just has candy... and I showed great restraint at the Dollar Tree and only got a pack of glitter leaves and a pumpkin mold. Consider yourself warned.
Your loving wife,
Cara

Allison's First Soccer Game

Ok, so I probably went overboard a bit... but I wanted to make Allison's first soccer game special, and it was so easy, thanks to Kara's Party Ideas. She has an incredible blog, (even if she spells her name wrong), and a bunch of free soccer downloads from the World Cup which just happen to be in red and gold, (Allison's team colors!)

She even had a fun coloring page! (and finger puppets and cupcake holders, but I had to stop somewhere!)
Notice my husband in the background playing Wii. He actually did all the cleaning for me, so I got to do the fun stuff! Soon after this I joined him playing Wii!

Good morning, girls!

Big girl using her own knife to cut her egg...

Almost too excited to stand still to take a picture!

And, here's our team cheerleader! We got the megaphone and pom pom set at the Dollar Tree; (probably Halloween costumes!) She's been about as excited to cheer as Allison has been to play soccer.

It was SO cute! The kids were clueless about how to play... we were lucky if they went the right direction. Most of the kids, that is. There were a few boys who seemed to be really good.

At this age they don't keep score, but I believe we lost 1 -4. Guess who scored our only goal? Yup! Way to go, Allison!

I LOVE this shot... Allison chasing her best friend! How fun that we got to play her for our first game!
Shaking hands with her buddy!

Sierra was a trooper, and fell asleep within seconds of driving away.

Allison's pet butterfly took ride home with us, as well!
